The Doctor's Halloween Movie Special

Welcome to my Halloween Movie Special!

Every year in October, I enjoy spending some of my free time watching horror movies. So if you are planning on staying in for Halloween, here are some films you might want to check out.

Let's begin!

MIDSOMMAR

This horror film follows a couple who travel to Sweden to visit a friend's rural hometown during a rare midsummer festival. What begins as an idyllic summer retreat soon takes a disturbing turn.

When I found out Popeyes ran out of their chicken sandwich.

This film was written and directed by Ari Aster who also wrote and directed last year's critically acclaimed Hereditary. While not as scary, this film definitely still stands out thanks to great acting and a layered story. Where Hereditary was all about loss and grief, Midsommar is all about relationships. Aster takes this theme to an unnerving place but it is a journey worth taking. I highly recommend this film. I will have to keep my eye out for more from this writer/director.

US

This film centers on a family of four as they arrive at their summer home in Santa Cruz. However, the family is soon attacked by four strangers who shortly reveal themselves to be the family's dopplegangers.

"I said I don't want your scout cookies!"

Written and directed by Jordan Peele (Get Out), this film starts out as a simple home invasion but quickly becomes much more. Peele introduces a new kind of monster with its own mythology and meaning behind it. The acting is also top notch with Lupita Nyong'o (Black Panther, 12 Years a Slave) starring. This is definitely a must-watch for horror fans.

OUIJA: ORIGIN OF EVIL

The prequel to the 2014 horror movie Ouija, this film is centered on a family that runs a seance business. The widowed mother decides to bring in a Ouija board as a new prop but she soon regrets that mistake. Things take a turn for the worse when the youngest daughter builds an especially close bond with the board.

I know... I'm shocked a Ouija movie ended up good too.

Directed by Mike Flanagan (Hush, Oculus, The Haunting of Hill House), whose praises I have sung on previous blog entries, this prequel is way better than the original movie. The youngest daughter shows she has acting chops and this film is genuinely creepy throughout. I admittedly got chills a few times. Maybe don't watch it if you plan on going to sleep soon after but this is another must-see for horror fans.

BRIGHTBURN

This horror movie follows familiar comic book style tropes, focusing on a young alien boy adopted by a couple in a small town. As the boy nears puberty, a power begins to manifest within him as well as a darkness. Can anyone stop a super boy gone wrong?

You're pretty much done if you see this little guy.

Directed by David Yarovesky (The Hive), this film does not quite live up to the premise. More could have been done on the horror side of things but this is an interesting take on the Superman set up, and one fans of both horror and comics may enjoy. Give this one a look.

PET SEMATARY

A remake of the 1989 classic, and based on a Stephen King novel, this film follows a family that just moved into a small rural town in Maine from the big city. The family soon discovers a mysterious burial ground where the dead come back to life but sometimes... dead is better.

"Sometimes the original is better."

Directed by Kevin Kolsch and Dennis Widmyer (Starry Eyes), I was disappointed with how flat this movie came off at times. The film definitely has its good points though and there are some creepy moments. The story also takes a different direction than the original. If you are curious, it may be worth a watch. However, I cannot help but feel that would be time better spent just watching the original movie or reading the book.

SWAMP THING

I often plug TV series on here and this is a really cool one for comic book and horror fans. The 10-episode first season follows CDC researcher Abby Arcane as she investigates a bizarre and deadly swamp-borne virus in her childhood home of Marais, Louisiana. Abby develops a bond with scientist Alec Holland but tragedy strikes. Alec seemingly dies but is soon transformed into the Swamp Thing.

Swamp Thing himself is simultaneously both scary and badass.

Based on the comic book of the same name, and executive produced by James Wan (Insidious, The Conjuring, Aquaman), this series thankfully leans heavy into its horror roots with gory special effects. This gives the show something to make it stand out. In addition, the characters are likable and the story is intriguing. Unfortunately, the show was cancelled before the first season even finished due to cost issues. Hopefully someone can pick it up but the first season is worth watching if you like comic books and horror. The series is currently available only on the DC Universe app.

That's it for my Halloween Movie Special. I hope you all have fun and stay safe. Happy Halloween!

Wonder Woman and Justice League - SDCC Trailers

Warner Bros. has released the Comic-Con trailer for Wonder Woman!

Definitely feels different from Man of Steel and Batman v Superman, which might be a good thing. I like what I see so far. It is fun seeing Wonder Woman plow through random soldiers, but they may be a little too easy to take down. Knowing Warner Bros, they will give Wonder Woman a suitably formidable antagonist to fight. Looking forward to seeing more.

Directed by Patty Jenkins, the films stars Gal Gadot, Chris Pine, Robin Wright, Connie Nielsen, Lucy Davis, Lisa Loven Kongsli, Florence Kasumba, Danny Huston, David Thewlis, Ewen Bremner, Saïd Taghmaoui, and Elena Anaya.

Here is a synopsis:

"Diana (Gal Gadot), princess of the Amazons, was raised on a sheltered island and trained to be an unconquerable fighter. After American pilot Steve Trevor (Chris Pine) crashes on the island and tells her about a world war that is happening, Diana leaves her home to try to stop the war."

Surprisingly, Warner Bros. also released the Comic-Con trailer for Justice League!

It is exciting to finally see all these characters together on screen. Looks like Warner Bros. is changing the overall tone of their films to feel less grim. This is not a bad choice, but hopefully they also understand that it will require more than just a tonal shift to make the films work. As of now, I am cautiously optimistic.

Directed by Zack Snyder, the film stars Ben Affleck, Henry Cavill, Gal Gadot, Jason Momoa, Ezra Miller, and Ray Fisher.

Here is the official synopsis:

"Fueled by his restored faith in humanity and inspired by Superman's selfless act, Bruce Wayne enlists the help of his newfound ally, Diana Prince, to face an even greater enemy. Together, Batman and Wonder Woman work quickly to find and recruit a team of metahumans to stand against this newly awakened threat. But despite the formation of this unprecedented league of heroes - Batman, Wonder Woman, Aquaman, Cyborg, and The Flash - it may already be too late to save the planet from an assault of catastrophic proportions."

Wonder Woman will arrive on July 2, 2017, while Justice League is scheduled for release on November 17, 2017.

Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice - Official Final Trailer

Watch the epic final trailer for Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice!

Wow, that was the best trailer by far. Batman looked brutal in the opening fight scene. This is the trailer they should have released in the first place. I am definitely pumped to watch this now more than ever.

Directed by Zack Snyder, the film stars Henry Cavill, Ben Affleck, Gal Gadot, Jesse Eisenberg, Amy Adams, Laurence Fishburne, Jeremy Irons, Diane Lane, Holly Hunter, and Jason Momoa.

Here is an official synopsis:

"Fearing the actions of a god-like super hero left unchecked, Gotham City's own formidable, forceful vigilante takes on Metropolis' most revered, modern-day savior, while the world wrestles with what sort of hero it really needs. And with Batman and Superman at war with one another, a new threat quickly arises, putting mankind in greater danger than it's ever known before."

Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice will arrive in US theaters on March 25, 2016.

Suicide Squad - Second Trailer

Watch the newest trailer for Suicide Squad! "Worst. Heroes. Ever."

This could be one of the better DC Comics films. Looks like a lot of fun and true to the roots of the original characters. See what happens when you take chances on more obscure properties?

Directed by David Ayer, the film stars Will Smith as Deadshot, Jared Leto as The Joker, Margot Robbie as Harley Quinn, Joel Kinnaman as Rick Flag, Jai Courtney as Captain Boomerang, Cara Delevingne as Enchantress, Viola Davis as Amanda Waller, Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje as Killer Croc, Karen Fukuhara as Katana, Adam Beach as Slipknot, and Jay Hernandez as El Diablo.

Here is a short synopsis:

"It feels good to be bad... Assemble a team of the world's most dangerous, incarcerated Super Villains, provide them with the most powerful arsenal at the government's disposal, and send them off on a mission to defeat an enigmatic, insuperable entity. U.S. intelligence officer Amanda Waller has determined only a secretly convened group of disparate, despicable individuals with next to nothing to lose will do. However, once they realize they weren't picked to succeed but chosen for their patent culpability when they inevitable fail, will the Suicide Squad resolve to die trying, or decide it's every man for himself?"

Suicide Squad is scheduled to arrive in US theaters on August 5, 2016.

Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice - Official Trailer 2

Doomsday appears in the new trailer for Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice!

Still not sure about Lex Luthor, but it is exciting to see Batman, Superman, and Wonder Woman teaming up against the devastating Doomsday. Just as exciting, this film will be a catalyst for several more DC Comics based movies, including the eventual release of a Justice League film. Hopefully Warner Bros. can keep the quality of the films up.

DC's Legends of Tomorrow - New First Look Trailer

Yes, that is Doctor Who alumnus Arthur Darvill as a time traveller. With a formidable villain like Vandal Savage taking center stage, this new program has a lot going for it.

The show stars Victor Garber as Dr. Martin Stein/Firestorm, Brandon Routh as Ray Palmer/The Atom, Caity Lotz as Sara Lance/White Canary, Arthur Darvill as Rip Hunter, Ciara Renee as Kendra Saunders/Hawkgirl, Franz Drameh as Jay Jackson/Firestorm, Dominic Purcell as Mick Rory/Heat Wave, and Wentworth Miller as Leonard Snart/Captain Cold.

Having seen the future, one he will desperately try to prevent from happening, time-traveling rogue Rip Hunter is tasked with assembling a disparate group of both heroes and villains to confront of an unstoppable threat - one in which not only is the planet at stake, but all of time itself. Can this ragtag team defeat an immortal threat unlike anything they have ever known?"

Preacher - First Full-Length Trailer

Watch the first full-length trailer for AMC's new comic book adaptation, Preacher.

Starring Dominic Cooper, and produced by Seth Rogen, Evan Goldberg, and Sam Catlin, the new series is based on Garth Ennis and Steve Dillon's critically acclaimed DC/Vertigo comic book of the same name.

Here is a synopsis:

"Preacher, published between 1995 and 2000, tells the story of Custer, a small town Texas preacher who, nearly at his faith's end, finds himself merged with a supernatural entity, Genesis, birthed from both an angel and a demon. Imbued with the word of God (the ability to make anyone obey his commands), Jesse hits the road, reunited with his ex-girlfriend, Tulip, and joined by a rowdy Irish vampire, Cassidy, to track down God himself and force him to explain why he abandoned his duties in Heaven."

Preacher is set to debut its 10-episode first season exclusively on AMC in 2016.

Arrow - Season 4 Trailer

The CW debuted the season 4 trailer for Arrow at Dragon Con and it has a few surprises.

Yes, that is Constantine at the 43 second mark. Looking forward to that crossover. Now if another network could just pick up the series where it left off.

Also noteworthy, Diggle debuts his new crimefighting costume this season.

Magneto?

It's about time he donned a mask. Diggle looks a bit like a modern version of The Guardian, an obscure hero from the pages of DC Comics.

The trailer also showed off Neal McDonough as Damien Darkh, Alexander Calvert as Anarky, Echo Kellum as Mr. Terrific, and the return of Caity Lotz as Sarah Lance. Season 4 is going to be interesting to say the least.

The new season of Arrow will premiere on Wednesday, October 7th at 8pm/7c on The CW.

Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice - Comic-Con Trailer

Warner Bros. has released the Comic-Con trailer for Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice. "Black and blue. God vs. man. Day vs. night."

Although I am still not too sure about Lex Luthor with the ugly shirt and toupee, Jesse Eisenberg's acting is great, and everything else looked amazing. The only real concern is how much it looks like they are cramming into this movie. That said, it is difficult not to get hyped for this. Batman is livid with Superman for the destruction from the first film, and Ben Affleck's acting is looking above form in the trailer.

Noteworthy: we finally got to see Wonder Woman in action! Also, will Zod's dead body come into play somehow? Is the child Wayne is holding going to be his Robin? How does Aquaman figure into the story? What was with that fight between Batman and those soldiers? So many questions, but I would rather wait to watch the movie for the answers.

Directed by Zack Snyder, the film stars Henry Cavill, Ben Affleck, Jesse Eisenberg, Jeremy Irons, Amy Adams, Laurence Fishburne, Gal Gadot, and Jason Momoa.

DC's Legends of Tomorrow - First Look Trailer

The CW has released the epic first trailer for their new crossover series, DC's Legends of Tomorrow!

Whoah. Good to see the Sara Lance character back as the White Canary. It is also nice to see lesser known characters getting some time to shine like Hawkgirl and Rip Hunter. Vandal Savage should prove to be a worthy antagonist for this group. If Arrow and The Flash are any indication, this will be a good show for superhero fans.

The show stars Victor Garber as Dr. Martin Stein/Firestorm, Brandon Routh as Ray Palmer/The Atom, Caity Lotz as Sara Lance/White Canary, Arthur Darvill as Rip Hunter, Ciara Renee as Kendra Saunders/Hawkgirl, Franz Drameh as Jay Jackson, Dominic Purcell as Mick Rory/Heat Wave, and Wentworth Miller as Leonard Snart/Captain Cold.

Here is an official synopsis:

Can this ragtag team defeat an immortal threat unlike anything they have ever known?"

DC's Legends of Tomorrow is set to debut on The CW next year.

Supergirl - First Look Trailer

CBS has released the first trailer for their upcoming series Supergirl!

Great overview of the series. Looks like a fun show, and appears to stick fairly close to the source material, much like Arrow and The Flash. It also has a similar feel to those CW programs, which is definitely a good thing. Might have to give the show a watch myself.

The series stars Melissa Benoist as Kara Danvers/Kara Zor-El/Supergirl, Calista Flockhart as Cat Grant, Chyler Leigh as Alexandra "Alex" Danvers, Mehcad Brooks as James "Jimmy" Olsen, and David Harewood as Hank Henshaw. Laura Benanti will have a recurring role as Alura Zor-El, Kara's biological mother. Helen Slater (who portrayed Kara in the 1984 Supergirl film) and Dean Cain (who portrayed Superman in the TV series Lois & Clark: The New Adventures of Superman) have signed on to appear in mystery roles.

Here is the official synopsis courtesy of CBS:

"SUPERGIRL is an action-adventure drama based on the DC Comics character Kara Zor-El (Melissa Benoist), Superman's (Kal-El) cousin who, after 12 years of keeping her powers a secret on Earth, decides to finally embrace her superhuman abilities and be the hero she was always meant to be. Twelve-year-old Kara escaped the doomed planet Krypton with her parents' help at the same time as the infant Kal-El. Protected and raised on Earth by her foster family, the Danvers, Kara grew up in the shadow of her foster sister, Alex (Chyler Leigh), and learned to conceal the phenomenal powers she shares with her famous cousin in order to keep her identity a secret. Years later at 24, Kara lives in National City assisting media mogul and fierce taskmaster Cat Grant (Golden Globe Award winner Calista Flockhart), who just hired the Daily Planet's former photographer, James Olsen (Mehcad Brooks), as her new art director. However, Kara's days of keeping her talents a secret are over when Hank Henshaw (David Harewood), head of a super-secret agency where her sister also works, enlists her to help them protect the citizens of National City from sinister threats. Though Kara will need to find a way to manage her newfound empowerment with her very human relationships, her heart soars as she takes to the skies as Supergirl to fight crime. Greg Berlanti ('The Flash,' 'Arrow'), Ali Adler, Sarah Schecter and Andrew Kreisberg are executive producers for Berlanti Productions in association with Warner Bros. Television. The pilot was directed by Glen Winter ('Arrow')."

Supergirl will air on Monday nights at 8pm ET/PT this November on CBS.

Batman: Arkham Knight - "All Who Follow You" Trailer

Nightwing, Robin, and Catwoman join the fight in the latest trailer for Batman: Arkham Knight.

The new trailer is showing off the new "Dual Play" mechanic, which Warner Bros. says allows players to "switch seamlessly between The Dark Knight and his allies including Robin, Nightwing, and Catwoman in free-flow combat." Sounds like developer Rocksteady Studios is working very hard to make this an amazing last entry in the Arkham series.

Here is a short synopsis for the game:

"In the explosive finale to the 'Arkham' series, Batman faces the ultimate threat against the city he is sworn to protect. The Scarecrow returns to unite an impressive roster of super villains, including Penguin, Two-Face and Harley Quinn, to destroy the Dark Knight forever. Batman: Arkham Knight introduces Rocksteady's uniquely designed version of the Batmobile, which is drivable for the first time in the franchise. The addition of this legendary vehicle, combined with the acclaimed gameplay of the 'Batman Arkham' series, offers gamers the ultimate and complete Batman experience as they tear through the streets and soar across the skyline of the entirety of Gotham City."

Batman: Arkham Knight will arrive on June 23rd for the PC, Xbox One, and PS4.

Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice - First Official Teaser Trailer

Warner Bros. has officially released the full HD teaser trailer for Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice. Now with 100% less shaky cam!

That last line was badass. Also loved the imagery of a human looking up at Superman like he is some kind of angel or god, only to be followed by "False God" scrawled on a statue of him.

For those familiar with Frank Miller's graphic novel The Dark Knight Returns, the film should look familiar. Batman's armor and bulky frame are straight out of the pages of the book. However, there is a bit of role reversal this time around in the sense that Superman appears to be reviled by the public in the film, whereas Batman was the pariah in Miller's story.

Directed by Zack Snyder, the film stars Henry Cavill, Ben Affleck, Jesse Eisenberg, Jeremy Irons, Amy Adams, Laurence Fishburne, Gal Gadot, and Jason Momoa.

Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice will arrive in US theaters on March 25, 2016.

Batman: Arkham Knight - "Gotham is Mine" Trailer

Batman must protect Gotham from Scarecrow in the newest trailer for Batman: Arkham Knight.

Each trailer looks better than the last one. It appears Poison Ivy is returning along with The Riddler, Harley Quinn, Two-Face, and The Penguin. Could not help but notice the heavily armed thugs as well. Each Arkham game has raised the stakes and this one looks to do the same. However, Rocksteady Studios appears to be pushing the envelope even further than before, seeing as this is the first Batman game to be rated M for its mature content. Nonetheless, considering how good Arkham Asylum and Arkham City were, this is a game that should be on almost everyone's radar.

Here is a short synopsis:

Batman: Arkham Knight will arrive on June 2 for the PC, Xbox One, and PS4.

Batman: Arkham Knight - ACE Chemicals Infiltration Trailer: Part 3

Batman kicks butt in the final part of the ACE Chemicals Infiltration trailer for Batman: Arkham Knight.

Shown today at Sony's PlayStation Experience event, the gameplay looks amazing. Great way to end off the big trailer. The PS4 exclusive Scarecrow mission looks impressive as well.

Batman: Arkham Knight - Ace Chemicals Infiltration Trailer: Part 1

Batman infiltrates ACE Chemicals in the new gameplay trailer for Batman: Arkham Knight.

Awesome! The trailer shows off Batman's aggressive new Fear Takedown, and the integration of Batmobile gameplay. The graphics also impress with a highly detailed cinematic look to the in-game engine.

Arrow: Season 3 - Extended Trailer with Ra's al Ghul

Ra's al Ghul appears in the extended Comic-Con trailer for Season 3 of Arrow!

The inclusion of such a great character like Ra's al Ghul is sure to get fans excited. They have good reason, considering the excellent first two seasons, the second of which raised the bar in terms of story, action, character development, and set pieces.

Another character being introduced this season is Ted Grant/Wildcat, a former boxer who will be involved in a story with Laurel Lance.

Wildcat from the comics.

The new season of Arrow will premiere on Wednesday, October 8th on the CW.

Constantine - Full Comic-Con Trailer

Warner Bros. released the full Comic-Con trailer for NBC's new supernatural series Constantine!

Yes, that is Doctor Fate's helmet in the trailer. Does that mean we could see the character show up on the program?

Doctor Fate for the uninitiated.

Here's hoping we get to see a few of DC Comics' occult characters showing up the same way we get superheroes like the Flash and Ray Palmer/The Atom on Arrow. I'm rooting for appearances by Deadman and Etrigan the Demon.

Constantine premieres on Friday, October 24th at 10/9c on NBC.

Zack Snyder Reveals Gal Gadot as Wonder Woman at Comic-Con

Zack Snyder finally revealed Gal Gadot as Wonder Woman from Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice at Comic-Con! Take a look at the Amazonian superhero in her full armor (click the photo for HD resolution).

Awesome sword is awesome.

Warner Bros. also recently gave us another look at Ben Affleck as Batman.

Dat chin doe.

Here is a look at DC's "Trinity" (Superman, Batman, and Wonder Woman) side by side.

Are you excited yet?

Now that Warner Bros. has shown us their Trinity, how about we get a look at Lex Luthor (Jesse Eisenberg), Cyborg (Ray Fisher), and the rumored Aquaman (Jason Momoa)?

They did show some footage of the film to the Comic-Con crowd, but the rest of us will have to wait a little while for that. Can't wait to see more!

Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice will open in US theaters on May 6th, 2016.
